Encore’s Fall Play is Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, Adapted by Kate Hamill
October 20-22, 2017 at the Hershey Area Playhouse
Set in 1790 Sense and Sensibility is one of Jane Austen’s well known books about a mother and her daughters who just lost the male bread-winner in the family and therefore lose their status and are sent to live in a simple cottage. Austen often pokes fun at the upper crust and this version is no different. The adaptation is hysterically funny with the various characters including the Dashwood family, their relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. Some scenes are farcical and Kate Hamill does a good job of not letting anyone get away with taking themselves too seriously. To add to the humor, there are five Gossips who act as narrators at times, play bit parts in the play and even act as dogs in a scene with the nosy neighbors.
There’s even a girl fight for which we will need some fight training!
There are many male and female roles, some of which will be doubled and possibly tripled. These are great characters for everyone to develop. Mrs Panyard will add games and exercises to help develop character and understand the text and tone of the script. If you are interested (not required) Mrs Bell will have some time to talk about the literary merit of the book, author, time period etc. This educational element coupled with your participation in the performance can possibly turn into a partial language credit for your portfolio.
This offer is a unique experience so please consider it not only for what you will learn, but how much fun it will be to perform with your fellow Encore friends. If you would like to talk about it with Mrs Panyard, please contact her, below. If you feel you will have scheduling conflicts, please talk with her anyway. You may borrow the play over the summer to read for yourself or order your own copy through Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
Hershey Area Playhouse: 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey (behind Karns)
Wednesday, August 2 from 2-4p (If you cannot make this time, contact Mrs Panyard to make another date that is BEFORE this audition date.)
The list of characters and parts of scripts will be placed on the website in the next few weeks. We will use these parts for auditions so become familiar with them, but no memorizing. You will register for auditions on the website.
Rehearsal Schedule: All rehearsals are at the Hershey Area Playhouse
Starting the week of August 28, rehearsals will generally be Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 1-3 or 1-4p and possibly one Saturday afternoon. You will not be required to attend all rehearsals during the week until we get close to tech week.
Tech Week will be the week of October 16 with afternoon rehearsals until Thursday, October 19 which will be in the evening.
The requirement for participation in the play is $45 which includes a script that you may keep. There is no fundraising and no mandatory jobs for parents. We have a production team in place with just a few jobs that still need to be filled. If Moms and Dads would like to volunteer for a very non-stressful job like tickets, concessions, help cleaning, striking the set, please contact Mrs Panyard.
Thanks for considering being a part of this fall play. I’m really looking forward to directing all of you!
